Like so many of our spaces, this café at 54 W. 40th St. comes with a storied and slightly peculiar history. A little over a century ago, the building in which it’s situated was home to the Republican Club, a stronghold for conservatives in a notoriously left-leaning city. In 1961, all 11 stories were sold to the Overseas Press Club – a move that we like to imagine kicked off a blur of loudly spoken yarns, bourbon, and cigarettes poised in intricate, ivory ashtrays. From 1973 to 2012, the building was a more reserved place, home to the Daytop Rehabilitation Facility. Our café occupies a modest corner in a sun-drenched ground floor facing Bryant Park. Now occupied primarily by the co-working company WeWork, 54 W. 40th St. bustles with young professionals, artists and entrepreneurs. And coffee, of course. We serve pastries and a rotating selection of single origins and blends as drip coffee, iced coffee, and espresso drinks.
